Ethanol vs. Regular Gasoline MPG

SB:   Thanks for the comment.  For anyone who is considering leaving comments, we encourage them, we like to think about different perspectives, and we also like doing homework.

We tend to agree with you.  We also have someone in the Ethanol business, and he suggests that different blends tend to be more efficient.  Somtimes it takes a little tinkering with the blend to find the optimal feul effiency.  This same person that we know has a early 2000 model Acura and he says he got 30 MPG with blending E-30.  Again, your point is well taken, E-30 is not readily available for everyone.  Right at the pump, we can get E-10 and it is ten cents cheaper than regular gasoline.  If you are saying you got 3 mpg more out of your vehical, let’s do the math.   You have a 20 gallon tank.  Let’s take a set rate of $4.oo/gallon for regular and $3.90/gallon for ethanol.  To fill your tank would be $80.00 and $78.00 respectively.  Let us just say you get 18 miles per gallon with regular gasoline and 15 miles per gallon with Ethanol.  So, simple math would tell us you can go 360 miles on regular gas, and 300 miles on Ethanol.  So, basically, for an extra two dollars, you can get an extra 60 miles on your tank.  I would tend to agree with you, that Ethanol or at least E-10 is a bit misleading.    When it comes down to it, that extra ten cents per gallon numerically seems to be worth it.

Thanks again SB, and keep your comments coming.

Nothing on the site at the moment, but this is a very exciting time for us.  We would like to to start off by asking the general public what they would like to see on a website.  We obviously have some ideas, but what would make you check our website every couple of days?  What information would make it worth your time to visit us?  Any comments or suggestions is appreciated and welcome.   Come visit us here.

Fuel Additives to improve gas mileage

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Thanks to Carson, we had our first comment, and therefor our first homework assignment.  What do we think about fuel additives and whether they will work.  Let us first start off by saying, we have not tried fuel additives, we are a bigger believer in just driving slower, mainly because there is no way to know whether the Fuel additives may void the factory warranty or not.  With that being said, here is a list of the main fuel additives, and the pros and cons.

Acetone: is better known as propane to the common public.  There was a huge influx of propane vehicles in the gas shortage of the 80s.  Here is a website that shows exactly how the propane vehicle is designed and how it works.  As we progressed not many people do that anymore, they may just ad some acetone to the vehicle.  From my research, here and here, the basic premise behind using acetone(in the proper mixture, and from what we read, it was about 1 part to 500, that it will help vaporize the fuel completely.  Apparently in today’s vehicles there are claims that the fuel isn’t completely combusted, and therefor leaving some residual fuel behind, which in turn does not get the efficiency that could optimize mpg.  The first con that comes to mind, is obviously the combustibility of propane, mixed with a combustible such as gasoline could be extremely dangerous.  Also acetone is the main ingredient in paint thinner and if it was splashed or spilled on your vehicles paint, it could start to take it off.  The last con is that Acetone and ethanol do not mix.  You will not get a harmful effect, but the two cancel each other out, in turn negating the effect you are trying to reach.

CA40 - The jury seems to still be out on CA40.  There isn’t many substantial proof that leads the consumer one way or the other.  There seems to be a general conscience though that it may be another scam.  The more Americans search for opportunities to get better gas mileage, the more scams pop up to take advantage of people.  We are not saying this is a scam, but just be weary. Here is a video of CA-40

There are a number of fuel additives that can be purchase at your local gas station such as HEET, or some people say to put ether in it.  This site gives a list of all types of different additives and what they do.  The basic point behind this is, yes, these are ideas for a short term band aid on the scratch, but you(the customer) would still be purchasing something.  Another cost.  These are great ideas to not follow the norm, but at what cost.  We as a society can conserve our fuel intake for free.  We as a society are turning more and more into an instant gratification society(another post, on another day).   If you have used any of these additives and you would like to input and success or failure, please do so.  In the meantime, free is always good.  Put in a tape or C.D. kick back, and drive slower :)

Coming soon, a video of me and my 2005 GMC Sierra getting 22 MPG.  It is an all-stock vehicle, with no fuel additives, not going down hill, just taking my time.  Keep your eyes peeled for the video, for direct proof.

Thanks again Carson for starting a discussion, and we look forward to anymore comments from anyone.

Net Metering Solar Power makes YOU money

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Today is all about how you can help with ideas and putting it into action.  Let’s talk about Solar Power, and if done right, how you could actually make some money off of Solar Power.  Let us first tell you, that you have to live in an area to actually make a decent profit off the Solar Power, but, it can be done.  First, I want you to see a video called Solar Power 101Here you can see the very basics for those that don’t know much about it.

Let’s get right down to the nuts and bolts of things though.  We would do some actual calculations but it will take some average electric bills plus, how much your state will give for putting power back into the grid, or net metering by solar power.  We will have net metering via other alternative energies later today.

If you are interested in making some money, you can look at this site to get you interested in it, and possibly get you motivated.  That is a buisnessweek article about pioneers getting their foot in the door and how much they made by selling power back.  Remember, it all depends on where you live, because some states do no give a lot of money for net metering.  Here is a website that you can click on each state and it will show you what the actual incentives per state is.  Some of the more liberal conservationist states(i.e. California, Washington, etc) will give a much larger incentive then others.

Hypermiling

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

God Bless you!  we know, it sounds like a bodily function, but according to Wiki it’s not.  This is a way to conserve gas consumption.  You will see in the Wiki page, that Wayne Gerdes coined the phrase, so I want to make sure to give him credit where credit is due.

Hypermiling is the idea that no matter what type of vehicle you drive, you can get better fuel economy.  If you take the time to read the Wiki page, there are some dangerous ways to do it, and they are against the law, which we don’t condone, but, the thing we are focusing on is the idea.   Dare to be different.  Why let a large company control what and where you go.  We are so used to just following the herd, the large companies look at us as cattle.

Stand up for yourself and what you believe in!

Easy ways to lower Gas Price

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

O.K., so we started the blog for information.   Let’s get down to the nitty gritty.  All this information is wonderful to know, but what can “I” do?  I don’t have the money for an electric car, what possibly can I do to help cut back on oil consumption.  Where in our average day do we consume gas?  Anyone?

drving… is of course the number one consumption.

What about those who can’t or don’t want to get out of the car they are currently in.  Let’s look at something a little less thought about.  Where else do you use gas?  Look in your garage.  Let’s see, I have a hammer, a junk car that I swear I am going to fix someday, a lawnmower, a ladder, a workbench, a weed eater, and some garden tools.

Have you looked into an electric powered lawnmower?  What about an electric Weed Eater?  Sure, all the pros and cons say that the portability isn’t there.   We need “FREEDOM” when we cut our grass.  We don’t like to be attached to cords.  Do you know that now you can get a lawnmower that is electric and is cordless?  Besides,  is  having a cordless lawnmower something that ,we as Americans, is more important than money in our pocket?  What is more important to you?

electric powered lawnmowers information page

A list of electric lawnmowers for sale

Gas powered Lawn mower Some of the nicer lawn mowers are the same price as the electric powered ones.

Some people are saying, if we buy an electric lawn mower will it help THAT much?  In the times we live in, every gallon of gas saved means less consumption, which means WE control the demand, which means WE set the price.

Take a stand, and do what you can.
